I am writing this as an occultist and one that cares deeply about all life upon earth. I serve the Goddess and am her instrument. It is time to pierce the illusion and I call to my own people wherever they are. We can do better than this!
I’ve been doing in depth research on the Druids and their culture and have come to some very disturbing conclusions that I didn’t want to confront. Here are some basic facts that I don’t think anyone can dispute about the Druids and the Celtic culture.
According to Caesar there were three classes of people in the Celtic culture, the nobility, the Druids and the common people. We deliberately avoid confronting the fact of a nobility or an elite ruling class that was above the Druids.
This elite ruling class originated on the Pontic Steppe as nomadic horsemen and horsewomen that traveled in wheeled wagons with their herds. The women fought alongside the men and even the children rode horses as I mentioned in my last post. It is very easy to identify this group as Haplogroup G and as red haired because of the elite nature of the group. Haplogroup G is very rare even though it was one of the first human migrations out of Africa in the neolithic period. Red hair is also very rare and occurs in only 1-2% of the population. It is notable that it occurs in Ireland and Scotland quite frequently as well as some other areas of eastern Europe.
In contrast Haplogroup I which occupied some of the same areas is very plentiful and belongs to the Germanic and Scandinavian races. This is not and cannot be an elite group as there are too many of them. This group also existed in Neolithic times but most known skeletons from the Neolithic are of Haplogroup G.
The Druids were a social development designed to support and keep the elite ruling class in power through the use of the sacred concept of “Hospitality”. The ruling group of nobles gave a sacred oath to preserve and protect the common people and in return the common people would pay tribute to them. The Druids were the middleman. They did this through control of the media as Bards, through the healing institutions as healers and through politics and religion as judges and priests. This was all to support the elite ruling class who were the warriors. They found ways to get rich themselves.
The nomadic horse people lived a self sustaining lifestyle that had no use for slaves or prisoners. They had a strict belief in reincarnation and because of that had no time for the belief in Gods and Goddesses. They became the gods and goddesses. They believed in the father sky, mother earth, the wind because it brought life and the sword because it took life. It was that simple. Mother Earth was both the Goddess of Storm and the Goddess of safe passage through the storm. It was an eternal becoming and you lived the best you could. You lived honorably! You died honorably! These nomadic horse people had no fear of death because they embraced it like they embraced life itself. They could sense life and the living spirits in all of nature that surrounded them and they worked and lived with animals and nature.
It is the values and beliefs of these people that we should be trying to understand and embrace, not those of the Druids!
The Druids invented religion to manipulate and control the masses. They taught the worship of gods and goddesses. Even worse, they restricted the use of fire to all members of the community, even though this was the bronze age and fire and pottery making were both known in the neolithic age! Both pottery making and metal working obviously requiring the use of fire! These things were used only for social control! In addition rocking stones or “judgement stones” and the trial by fire where a person’s feet were anointed with some type of oil before walking through a bed of hot coals were used to prove guilt or innocence. These were both easily manipulated and designed to con the general population who believed their stories. They judged the guilt and innocence of people according to their own whims and desires.
In summary the Druid culture was not any better than our society today and in fact, is remarkably similar! We need something new! A new elite group of leaders needs to step forward that is not corrupted. A new type of self empowerment, common sense and good will needs to be introduced. True magick needs to come back into our world!
As mentioned I speak as an occultist who is interested in the magickal empowerment of the individual. We are all walking wounded, but the most powerful ways to develop self esteem and competency in life remain the same as they were thousands of years ago. Basic survival skills, the ability to defend oneself and basic first aid. The nomad horse people demonstrated those skills while the Druids found ways to isolate those skills and keep them to themselves. The Druids were exempt from military service. I can see no way that keeping fire from people in the winter time can be validated!
“Are the echoes of these people with us today? Did they make a great impact?”
The Baltic, Slavic, Germanic,Celtic, Italic, Albanian, Hellenic, Armenian, Anatolian, Indo-Iranian and Tocharian languages all evolved from Proto-Indo-European, which was the language spoken by these steppe nomads. This includes their core values and beliefs. I call that quite an influence!
If you would like solid research on this I would recommend “The Horse, the Wheel and Language” by David W. Anthony published by Princeton University Press!
I have deliberately avoided the study of modern Druidism because I have been interested in the original Druids. I have no issue with reconstruction Druidism and am a happy member of OBOD! But I think a clear distinction should be made!
